Davis Island Garden Club is a garden and a waterline and not much else: live oaks, bougainvillea, a white gazebo and the Tampa skyline across the water. A white and green scheme in a setting like that is barely a colour scheme at all — it is a decision to let the garden do the decorating and to bring in only the things the garden cannot supply.
Which is exactly what this order was. Gabro supplied the bistro lighting, the tables and the tent. Not the seating, not the linen, not the flowers. Three items, each of them structural, each of them the difference between an afternoon in a park and a wedding that runs until midnight.
Bistro lighting is what makes an outdoor dinner a room
Bistro strings were run over the ceremony lawn and again down the length of the dinner tables. Outdoors there is no ceiling, which means there is no upper edge to the space, and without one an evening reception simply dissolves as the light goes. A catenary run puts a lit plane overhead at a fixed height and gives the party a footprint.
The dusk photographs from this wedding are the argument. There is a fifteen-minute window where the sky is still blue and the bulbs have just started to read, and it only exists if the lights are already up and already on before anyone thinks they are needed. Strings get switched on well before sunset, not at it, because the transition is what photographs.
The specification details are unglamorous. Warm bulbs, because guests look directly up into them all evening and a cool bulb reads as site lighting. Spans planned with a deliberate sag rather than pulled tight, since a taut cable is a cable under load and a slack one is a decorative line. Real anchor points — guyed and weighted poles, or venue-approved fixings — because a span across an open waterfront lawn carries wind. And drops set high enough to clear a raised arm, a photographer’s monopod and anyone standing on a chair for a toast.

Bare wood farm tables in a garden
Dinner ran on long wood farm tables with no linen on them, set among the planting rather than lined up on an open patch of lawn. In a garden that is the correct call: timber is the one table surface that belongs outdoors, and a white cloth in a green setting reads as an indoor object that has been carried outside.
It also removes a genuine problem. Linen on an open lawn is at the mercy of the same breeze the lights are engineered for, it wicks damp from the grass at the hem, and in direct Florida sun a white cloth goes from crisp to glare within an hour. Bare timber has none of those failure modes, and it is the reason the tables in these photographs look the same at three in the afternoon as they do at nine at night.
What bare wood asks for in exchange is care. The top is a finished surface on display for six hours, so it must arrive clean and unmarked, and standing water from a knocked glass will raise the grain if it is left. Tops are individually made, so a long run is matched for height and width before it is set rather than assembled in truck order. And on turf every table is levelled individually and re-walked once the settings are on, because weight settles a leg into soft ground.

A tent, which is insurance before it is decoration
A tent covered the evening, and guests moved under it for dancing. In Florida a tent is not a design choice you make because you want a tented wedding. It is the answer to a forecast, and the decision has to be made early enough that the structure can actually be delivered and built.
The useful way to think about it is capacity rather than weather. A tent that only fits the dance floor is a shelter; a tent sized to hold the seated guest count is a plan B. An afternoon storm on this coast can last twenty minutes, and the difference between a wedding that carries on and one that stops is whether there is somewhere for everyone to be while it passes.
Building one on a garden site is mostly about the ground and the edges. Anchoring is decided by the surface — stakes where the ground will take them, ballast where it will not or where irrigation and services run underneath — and every line and weight has to sit outside the walking route. Sidewalls are specified even when they are not fitted, because they are what turns a canopy into a room if the wind gets up. And the same bistro lighting is planned to work under it, so the light level does not change when the party moves inside.
